Our Green Policy
At Croft Organics we are committed to providing good quality self-catering accommodation whilst reducing the impact of our business activities on the environment.
In order to achieve this we are in conversion to full organic status with the Soil Association. We can provide you with fresh organic produce grown only metres from your doorstep.
We provide information to guests on how we use renewable energy and you will have the opportunity whilst holidaying with us to experience renewable wind technology in operation first hand.
We actively recycle on the croft and provide detailed information to guests on how they can contribute to this process.
We have information on local transport and on the many ‘carbon-lite’ activities that you can enjoy on Skye.
The Wind Turbine
We have a 5kw ISKRA turbine located on our apportionment. The turbine provides all the electricity for both our house and the cottage. We export any excess to the national grid. The Turbine was erected in October 2007. In the Laundry you can see the controls for the turbine and the import/export meter is located outside the cottage so you can measure just how much electricity your week has cost!
Electricity Charges and Heating
The flat charge for electricity per week is £15.00 on top of the rental for the cottage. However we will offer you the chance to take a ‘green gamble’ and by using the import/export meter will charge you the exact amount for your use during your stay. Basically the more the wind blows the less you pay! Those of you familiar with Skye will be able to judge for yourselves whether this is a gamble worth taking. You don’t need to decide until you get here! In the flat there are electric heaters which can all be thermostatically controlled. There are electric blankets on each bed. Energy light bulbs have been put wherever possible in the cottage.
Water
All detergents, washing powders, floor cleaners, etc., are ecologically sourced. All toilet paper used is made from recycled paper. We have a septic tank and therefore ask that nothing goes down the toilet other than toilet tissue. Please think before you flush! Toilets are fitted with water saving devices. We are very conscious of our water usage and therefore hope that during your stay you will also respect and be aware of your water consumption.
Recycling and Composting
We will recycle bottles, tins, plastic, cardboard, newspaper and vegetable matter from your stay. There is a large grey box outside the cottage for you to put things for recycling in and a green compost bin for vegetable matter. Some cardboard goes straight into our composting system along with all vegetable matter. Other items are recycled locally or made use of around the croft.
